Mercedes is stopping the development of a new platform for electric Vehicles
Mercedes-Benz is evidently halting development of its new MB.EA Large electric vehicle production platform, apparently reason is slower-than-expected sales of the EQE and EQS models.
First reported by Handelsblatt, the move will reportedly save billions in development costs as Mercedes rethinks its strategy for developing future luxury cars.
What about announced technologies?
This is a big change because the MB.EA platform, which was supposed to be ready by 2028, was supposed to bring several technologies shown on the ultra-long-range model Vision EQXX.
One of them was a range of over a thousand kilometers. But it seems that none of that.
Instead, reports say Mercedes will make a U-turn and divert the savings into further development of its EVA2 platform, which is currently used by the EQS and EQE.
And with Mercedes-Benz boss Ola Källenius assuring shareholders that the company will continue to produce electric and internal combustion engines for the foreseeable future, the scrapping of the MB.EA platform could prolong the existence of models like the S-Class while the switch to purely electric vehicles do not become more feasible.
